The Town of Millheim

E.G. Maetze established Millheim's first school in the 1850s, holding German classes. This school closed its doors in 1948. Bellville Independent School District serves the community today.

The name Muelheim, later adapted to the current spelling of Millheim, was suggested by Wilhelm Schneider, one of the many immigrants who settled in the Cat Spring area.  Around 1850, the first school was established by E. G. Maetze who provided local children with lessons using their German language.

Charles Nagel, a student of E. G. Maetze, went on to study at Washington University Law School and the University of Berlin becoming a successful lawyer then on to become the Secretary of Commerce and Labor for President Taft.

Millheim Hall History

The two acres Millheim Hall was built on in 1874 was purchased from Friedrick Engelking, Sr. and Heinrich Vornkahl. This hall served the community for elections, family gatherings, and various celebrations. The annual Father’s Day Barbecue, which is still held today, was begun in the first Harmonie Hall. In 1938 the hall was replaced with a new building on property donated by Otto and Dora Severin. Lumber from the old hall was incorporated into the build of the new hall. The first event in the new hall was a dance held on April 15, 1939.
